Widow

You were there
and now you’re gone.
This is her life now.
This is her song, sung
by one who once reigned
over her world, her
chosen domain, only now,
now her time has come.
The emptiness of the hours
cannot hold her. She cannot
be constrained. There is nothing
worthy of her longing, her passion.
Her past doesn’t fit within
the shortness of her days.
Her words cannot be confined
to scant, empty moments,
will not be circumscribed
by the few, the dwindling,
the quickly passing, minutes
of the precious life that remains.
